Learning to play the violin can be very rewarding. Listening to the beautiful sound that the violin plays is great but when you are the one that makes that beautiful sound then it’s fantastic. Once you make up your mind to learn the violin or have a member of your family learn to play, the next step is to find someone to teach you. This can be quite difficult if you are a left handed person. Because everything that a left handed person does is a mirror image of what a right handed person does, this can be a little difficult for a right handed violinist to teach a left handed person how to play.

This is where the idea of teaching yourself or family member comes in. You don’t only have the option of hiring a teacher to teach you violin, you can buy a course to self teach. Some people don’t like this idea as there is the problem of making yourself sit once or twice a week and learn something new. Others would think this is a great idea as you can teach yourself in your own time when and where you want, as fast or as slow as you want and not have anyone to answer to.

Some of the best musicians are self taught so what does that say for self teaching? Apart from the fact that you can become very good at learning to play the violin in a short space of time, you can also save a heap of money as you only pay the once for your learning material. There are many online lessons to play the violin,  you just have to choose the one that suits you and adapt it to your needs being a lefty.

A Few Things To Consider Before Hiring Your Personal Music Teacher

Hiring a private music teacher is not something you should do unprepared. You have to keep in mind that you need to make sure that you get what you pay for. You want to learn and make progress, and of course you will try to stay within your budget while you work on your road to success. In general, students with well-seasoned teachers will excel in their music career. Those who are guided by the pros in the business seem to be closer to victory. Do not underestimate however the abilities and thrive of the teacher who just graduated.

Keep in mind that how the private music teacher and the student relate to each other is extremely important. History has proven that a disliked music teacher can be a real road block on the way to success. After all, who wants to listen to and learn from a disliked teacher? The right music teacher is the one who surfs on the same wave. For some the casual approach works better than the disciplined one and for others it is just the other way around.

The 1:1 ratio of individual instruction seems to be more beneficial to a student than group instruction. The lessons can be adjusted to the individual needs of the student and no time gets wasted to aspects that are already mastered by the student. Individual instruction makes communication easier and the private music instructor is more opt to address the shortcomings of the particular student.

An experienced private music teacher brings along tested ways of teaching. In a private setting, however, a private music teacher has the opportunity to adjust to the needs of its pupil. In this setting the teacher can give full attention to the needs and wants of one particular student. After all, not all students prioritize what they want to learn the same way. Some students want to excel in playing existing music while for others personal improvisation is on top of the list. A private music teacher is able to individualize and decide on how to proceed on the spot.

But it is not a black and white situation and studying music together with others can also be a good thing. Being with peers and learning from each other can be to a student’s advantage. Learning how to excel as a team can be of great importance in a future career. Being in band or orchestra at school is for many a wise choice. But an individual approach to music lessons does not necessarily make a group project impossible. Many good instructors are aware of the benefits of this approach and coordinate projects where several students are involved.

Not everybody is capable of progressing in a group setting. Even the best programs do not work for students who need a personal approach. A group setting followed by private accentuation works for some, but others just need that one on one attention to get the ball rolling.
A personal instructor is usually also in a better position to work around your schedule. Lessons at odd times and on unusual days suddenly become a possibility.

The combination package is the ideal solution for many. Attending class with other students and working toward perfection with an individual teacher is by far the best and fastest way to become a successful, all-round, musician.

Learning How To Play The Violin Yourself

Is it difficult to learn how to play the violin by yourself? It certainly is. But learning how to do anything on your own can be a whole lot easier and definitely more fun if you apply enough commitment and discipline to the whole process. Millions of guitarists in every part of the world have been self-taught, and many have even gone on to become professional musicians. The same can be applied to someone trying to learn the violin. At the end of of it all, if you have the dedication and perseverance, no matter how difficult it is, the violin can be self-taught and might even be easy looking back at it.

The first thing one needs to ensure before trying to teach himself the instrument, is to ascertain how much desire there is to learning the craft. If you naturally love music and the instrument, it makes learning the violin a more enjoyable experience. That helps to overcome certain obstacles one might face learning the ropes by yourself.

As they say, no man is an island. That applies to learning the violin. Even if you are to remain self-taught, be sure to find like-minded individuals or friends who are also passionate about the same instrument. Exchange tips and lessons that can help to improve each other’s mastery of the violin. Sharing helps to understand what one might not be able to do so alone, while exploring new territories that you might not have discovered cooped up in your own room during your solo practices.

Applying discipline to your violin lessons and practice is a key ingredient of becoming a skilled violinist, especially if you decide to take on the self-taught route. There is no doubt that many hours of practice will have to be dedicated, while an amount of time has to be put aside to examine your progress and pinpoint other areas in your violin playing that have to be improved.

Learning musical theory is also necessary when picking up the violin. Unlike the guitar where tablature often substitutes the real need to be proficient at music theory, the violin does not have this advantage. It goes without saying that music theory can be tedious, but knowing it inside out will help speed up your knowledge and mastery of the violin in the long run.

There are many ways that you can use to teach yourself how to play the violin. But the keys to your success lie in your passion, dedication and discipline through constant application. If you are strong in these areas, no matter how difficult it might be at times, learning the violin without a professional teacher can ultimately prove to be more rewarding.
